Bluebikes from start to finish
Bluebikes is Greater Boston's bike-share system, with 400+ stations across Boston, Brookline, Cambridge, Somerville, Everett, Chelsea, Revere, and beyond. Once you've used it once, it's simple. Here's everything you need for the first time.
Getting started
1. Download the Bluebikes app (iOS/Android), create an account, add a payment method.
2. Open the app to see nearby stations and live availability. Green means bikes are available.
3. Tap "Unlock," scan the QR code on any available bike at the station. The lock releases.
Pricing options
- Single trip: $3.00 for 30 minutes (e-bikes +$0.33/min on top).

Returning
Roll the front wheel firmly into an empty dock until you hear a click and see the green light. Always tug-test — pull the bike backward gently to confirm it's locked. The most common docking issue is not pushing firmly enough; give it real force.
If you might run over your ride time
Dock at any station along the way, wait a minute, and undock a new bike. The clock resets. No penalty for swapping mid-trip.
If something goes wrong
- Station full? The app shows real-time dock availability — there's almost always one within a block or two.
- App still shows your ride active after docking? Take a screenshot of the green light. Contact Bluebikes through the app; they resolve these quickly and won't charge you for a properly returned bike.
