About the Commuter Challenge

The annual Green Streets Commuter Challenge is a fun-spirited competition among Greater Boston-area employers that brings awareness to personal transportation decisions and nudges all to make greener and/or healthier changes to their commutes once a month. Incremental changes are recognized (e.g. parking further away and walking more) and individuals who don't make a change are also rewarded.

** Please note that registration for the Challenge is on hold until further notice. Email info@gogreenstreets.org if you would like to be contacted when the Challenge registration opens. **

How it works

Workplace participants log a commute on their chosen day during the last week of every month. The last Friday of the month is celebrated as Walk/Ride Day, a monthly day of transportation awareness. Walk/Ride Days are a recurring opportunity to think about – and often to explore – more environmentally friendly and healthy commuting options. All commuters are encouraged to log a commute. Our app tracks all modes (car, carpool, walking, cycling, mass transit). By logging a commute, participants help their workplace's leaderboard ranking.

Participants see the impact of their commute on their personal health and the environment through calculations of calories burned and CO2 emissions saved. Workplaces receive information about the impact of the Challenge on commuting mode choices, calories and CO2 emissions through a summary impact report and infographic. Workplaces also have access to a private web dashboard to monitor employee engagement in the program.

Organizations pay a fee to participate to help support the costs of the program, technology, reporting, and incentives. Fees are based on the company's size and are listed on our registration form
