JULY 2010 UPDATE
Dear Green Streets friends,
We have been feeling the heat this steamy summer and it is
inspiring to hear your stories and green "escape routes" to ponds,
rivers, and the ocean by train, bus and bike. Start planning your August
routes and keep sharing your stories. We look forward to celebrating
this Friday's Walk/Ride Day with our friends and fellow travelers! Visit

WALK/RIDE DAY SPREADING...
This month, Green Streets founder and
director Janie Katz-Christy has been doing some family train travel,
meeting new friends and sharing the green message of Walk/Ride Day with
people from all over the world and communities
across the Amtrak
span. So many have been intereted in joining and expanding the
Walk/Ride Day / Green Streets efforts already taking place in the Boston
area, ME, NH and the UK!

Celebrate July's Walk/Ride Day all day
(and night) long!
Start off with a free breakfast at City Hall Plaza (and say hi
to Green Streets folks who will be tabling), get rewarded all day at
many new sponsors (listed below), visit us and get a bike tune-up at the
Ashmont T Station farmer's market, and top it off with a free movie!
End your day at t
he Boston Harbor Hotel where, at
8:00, you can take in their Friday Night "Movies By Moonlight" series.
This Walk/Ride Day, see Billy Wilder's classic, Some Like It Hot,
which the American Film Institute has ranked as the greatest American
comedy film of all time. Film is free and under the glorious harbor sky.
It is a quick walk from either the Aquarium T stop or South Station T stop.

NEWS FROM SOMERVILLE

Youth Films
for Active Transit! Shape Up Somerville, Groundwork Somerville, and
SCAT are teaming up this summer with Somerville teens to make
youth-produced documentary short-films; each segment will promote
walking, biking, and other forms of active transit in the
community to inspire more independence, movement, activity and
experience among their peers. You can see their progress
here and we’ll be sure to link the film footage in time for August
Walk/Ride Day.
Somerville's third
SomerStreets celebration on July 25th was a big success, with hundreds
“going green” all afternoon: walking, dancing and cycling down East
Broadway. Catch up on what you missed, here.

PIE IN JULY! THIS MONTH'S RAFFLE
CHECK-IN PRIZE
If you participate in this week's Walk/Ride Day and check in online
or sign in at one of Green Streets' visibilities this Walk/Ride Day,
you will be entered in a raffle for a $20 It will be a sweet end to the
month. Raffle prize for July 30th Walk/Ride Day is a $20 gift
certificate to Petsi Pies. With
a Somerville and Cambridge location it will be easy to walk, bike or
take the T to pick up your pie--choosing a flavor may take a little more

month’s Walk/Ride Day raffle winner and he is choosing the MassBike membership has his prize. At first learning that he
won, David felt a bit guilty because: “I take the T three stops every
day-- all I have to do on Walk/Ride Day is wear green and tell people
about it. But of course it doesn't have to be a sacrifice to be green!
