A
large and enthusiastic crowd turned out on Jan 11th for the "9 in 09
Walk/Ride Day Challenge" City Hall reception. Arriving by foot, bike,
bus and train, over 100
students, teachers, parents, business people and other community
members came to celebrate their participation in at least nine
Walk/Ride Days in 2009.
Students and faculty from Cambridge public and private schools and MIT were there, as well as members of the Cambridge School Committee and City Council. Schools Superintendent Jeffrey Young, Chamber of Commerce's Terrence Smith, Public Health Department's Claude-Alix Jacob, Somerville Walk/Ride Coordinator Nicole Rioles, were joined by bike advocates, researchers from local pharmaceutical companies, engineering firms and universities.
Former Mayor Denise Simmons addressed the group in the Sullivan Chamber and applauded their leadership and the contribution they were making to the health and safety of our community. Almost all attendees also won raffle prizes donated from businesses throughout the city, including a $100 cash card from Millennium Pharmaceuticals, a beaded bracelet crocheted and a cake baked by School Committee members Nancy Tauber and Patty Nolan, Green Streets safety vests and t-shirts, and gift cards from local retailers.
