On a daily basis my joy of commuting 25 miles roundtrip
by bicycle to work and back home on Boston's city streets is
interrupted by angry motorists, screaming, honking, or trying to cut me
off. So, I was surprised and thrilled one morning while riding into
work when a very friendly enthusiastic cyclist pulled up behind me at a
light and called out, "It's you!!!" I looked over at the young woman
and said, "I'm sorry, but I don't recognize you."
She said, "You
wouldn't know me, but I recognize your bike covered with buttons and
the pink fuzzy dice hanging off the back of your seat. I drive my car
past you while you're riding your bike every morning on my way to work.
You inspired me to commute by bike too, but I must admit I'm a bit
scared of riding in traffic." I was so excited to hear that I was
someone else's inspiration to start cycling that I spent the next 5 to
10 minutes giving her advice. I spent so much time discussing what dangers to look out for from
motorists and pedestrians, how to make herself more visible with
reflective clothing and blinking lights, what gear to buy to stay
comfortable out in the elements, and how to enjoy the day no matter
what comes your way, that I was late to work!
She
really made my day and I hope she continues to ride and becomes more
empowered as she gains confidence riding in city traffic. Truly, the
positive experience of cycling to work every day overpowers any
negative interactions I encounter along the way.
