The Alewife
A Cambridge architect-turned-activist who hopes to set her neighbors moving in an eco-friendly direction explained to The Alewife at its Sept. 14 meeting her group’s efforts to get people walking.
“People don’t walk anymore,” said Janie
S. Katz-Christy, director of Green Streets, which is the brainchild of a small, grassroots volunteer group of Cambridge parents.
Katz-Christy said she and the other volunteers set out on its first Walk/Ride Day on March 31, 2006 to promote active transportation, community building and environmental protection.
“I have this vision that ultimately, driving will be as uncool as smoking,” Katz-Christy said .
Her goal for what started as the Cambridge
Green Streets Initiative a year and a half ago and has since evolved into a tri-city effort, including Cambridge, Somerville and Medford, she said.
