MORE ABOUT US AND OUR WALK/RIDE DAYS: We are a group of people who live, work, study or send children to school in Cambridge. For many reasons, including environmental, health, safety and community building ones, we have created Walk/Ride Days. On Walk/Ride days, which occur on the last Friday of every month, we encourage people to wear something green and use a "green" means of transportation in their commute or travels about the city that day. Ride a bus, train, bicycle or scooter, skate or walk, or any combination... even carpool... as you set a good example for children, friends, and coworkers. Our goal is to make Cambridge safer, quieter and friendlier for pedestrians and cyclists, and to minimize the use and impact of cars in Cambridge.
WE'RE GROWING! Walk/Ride Days started in March, 2006 in public and private schools throughout Cambridge. The response was terrific - see many articles below. Since then, we have expanded to include businesses and organizations across the city. Part of Green Streets' success has been in being a small, but repeating commitment. Even if people don't participate the first month, often they do the next. Many people have thanked us for encouraging them to do something they'd been meaning to do, and something about which they are proud. People of all ages and situations seem to enjoy it, look forward to it and feel proud of their involvement!
We invite you to join us, or simply to participate in our Walk/Ride Days. Please email us to register your company or organization, or to start a similar organization in your town. Somerville has just started its own "Green Streets Initiaitve", and we have received requests from other towns far and near to do so as well, including Belmont, Arlington, Medford, Newton, Watertown and Boston MA, and some cities and towns in other states. Email us (walk-ride-days@comcast.net) for more info.
